Singer, songwriter, arranger, performer… Amélia Muge is one of the most acclaimed women currently working in Portuguese music. Her versatile talent has seen her compose Fados for Camané or Ana Moura, record with Gaiteiros de Lisboa, produce Mafalda Arnauth or cover Laurie Anderson.
What there is in common between all of these different sides is Amélia’s unique rigour and commitment to each project, and the personal touch she brings to them. She is one of the most in-demand contemporary Portuguese songwriters, able to fuse her own universe with that of the singer she is writing for. Amélia’s multifaceted talent ensures a unique evening no matter which of her many line-ups shows up on any given night.
Amélia’s standard show in her own name features a five-piece band concentrating on the material she has been recording for the past 20 years, drawn from half a dozen acclaimed solo albums where music and lyrics are given equal status.
In 2016 Amélia created a project around Amália Rodrigues’ Fado poetry, a side of her insufficiently known to the public. Amélia found the best way to connect to the talent of Amália by, bringing into these verses all her musical diversity, and portraying an Amália little known from the public.
Over the past years Amélia has also been performing her collaboration with Greek composer Michales Loukovikas. Together they recorded “Periplus”, an album of “Luso-Hellenic Voyages” commissioned by Guimarães European Cultural Capital 2012 exploring the Mediterranean cultural territories where Portuguese and Greek music meet.
The extraordinary success of “Periplus” took everyone by surprise and Amélia and Michales are now releasing a follow-up, “ARCHiPÉLAGOS – Passagens” that is the basis of their new stage production.
