On tour: Known as the “Ella Fitzgerald” of Cape Verde, the extraordinarily versatile and seductive singer that is Carmen Souza is currently traveling the world to promote her acclaimed 2017 album “Creology”.
“Creology” is a record that shows her unique approach to jazz, incorporating influences from her native Africa but also from the many international cultures she has been in contact with. Carmen has been performing worldwide on a regular basis and this year alone she has played at London’s Union Chapel, Paris and Graz.
More about Carmen Souza
Lisbon-born of Cape-Verdian origin but London-based, Carmen Souza’s music reflects her cosmopolitan sensibility in the way she fuses many different musics. Jazz, African morna, Afro-Cuban stylings, all come to a head in her expressionistic, enveloping voice, best experienced in a stage setting.
“Carmen Souza sings in her native creole dialect with an intimacy, sensuality, and vivacity, characterised by a tremendous lightness of touch. Her music has a deceptive simplicity, a rare clarity, derived from a unique mix of influences from her Cape Verdean background to jazz and modern soul creating this beautifully vibrant, largely acoustic, accessible hybrid. World soul music for the 21st century” David Sylvian
