Crossroads and encounters result in new things, unusual paths, especially when it comes to artists who are open to collaboration and the stimulus of others. And these are certainly the cases of Lina_ and Jules Maxwell. The Portuguese artist has received serious international attention – translated into countless concerts, awards and praise from the global press – both for her work with Raül Refree on an album honouring Amália Rodrigues and now with the award-winning ‘Fado Camões’, produced by Justin Adams and with the participation of John Baggott (Massive Atack and Portishead), in a distinctive sound universe that has given fado a new lease of life.
Likewise, Jules Maxwell has been the protagonist of acclaimed projects that are the result of creative encounters: with singer Lisa Gerrard, who the world knows as the soul of Dead Can Dance, or with the acclaimed international project Le Mystère de Voix Bulgares, for example. The Irish producer and composer has worked in various fields, from folk and electronica to opera and soundtracks, always with enormous recognition. Now, after ‘Burn’, the concept album that brought together Lisa Gerrard and Jules Maxwell, the work is resumed with Lina_ and Jules, the new chapter in his career involves a meeting with Portuguese fado singer Lina_.
Jules and Lina_ met in a magical place, the stunning Malmesbury Abbey, a 12th century building in Wiltshire, England, for an artistic residency in which they created new material together, songs that explore the invisible links between fado and the music of Ireland, two fine examples of a musical translation of the more melancholic side of the soul of two peoples. This new material will give rise to a new album, but also to a concert in which these connections will be taken further, benefiting from Jules Maxwell’s cinematic and ambient vision and Lina_’s transparent and sublime voice.
