A ESTRANHA BELEZA DA VIDA – THE PROJECT
A Estranha Beleza da Vida is the title of Rodrigo Leão’s new album, released in October 2021. A new record that will also mark the composer’s return to the international stages.
Throughout his career Rodrigo has composed and conceived some of his records as if they were films or a story to be told. Like in a film, it all comes down to the casting of the voices that will bring to life each character of the narrative. Rodrigo then adds in the sounds and moods to create the final cut that gives each record its own diversity and identity, dictated by each of its stories.
This is what happened in albums such as Alma Mater, Cinema or A Mãe, and the same happens with A Estranha Beleza da Vida. Records where the guests are the characters that make up the story, as happened with Adriana Calcanhoto, Beth Gibbons, Ryuichi Sakamoto or Neil Hannon.
In common all these records share more than a music style or genre, but the idea of an album as a film, and of cinema as its world.
A Estranha Beleza da Vida began to take shape at the end of the year. ” I started thinking about this album in October 2020, when I returned to Lisbon after months in the countryside. I could feel a difference in the first songs: something more positive, happier, different from the previous record’s moods. Some of them made me think of a time long before ours. Maybe this was no accident, maybe this was an unconscious attempt to forget what was happening…”
Rodrigo has never shied away from exploring genres from all over the world – waltz, tango, chanson, samba, neoclassical, ambient and indie – and transforming them through his very own eyes, through all the many travels he has experienced. A Estranha Beleza da Vida is such a journey through songs and moods that have been recreated and transformed by Rodrigo’s happy experiences and inspirations.

RODRIGO LEÃO CINEMA PROJECT – TOUR: A ESTRANHA BELEZA DA VIDA – 4 MUSICIANS ON STAGE
This show, in which Rodrigo Leão presents himself as Rodrigo Leão cinema project, resumes his connection with cinema and brings together repertoire from the three albums released in 2020 and 2021 (O Método, Avis 2020 and A Estranha Beleza da Vida), as well as a selection of the composer’s classic themes. It is therefore quite eclectic, with a wide range of musical styles from neoclassical to waltz.
On stage, Rodrigo Leão (synthesizer and piano and choirs) is accompanied by his usual band: Ângela Silva (voice, synthesizer and metallophone), Viviena Tupikova (voice, violin and piano) and João Eleutério (guitar, bass, synthesizer, percussion, Indian harmonium and choirs). In many concerts the band is joined by a local youth choir performing, among others, the choral parts recorded on the album O Método.
Also worthy of note are the live visuals by Gonçalo Santos, which include drawings by Rodrigo Leão himself. The lighting project and design were conceived by Miguel Ramos and Nuno Salsinha who also operate this live show. This team is joined by Frederico Gracias, the sound engineer for this project.
