Tour 2021/22 – The Project
Conductors are fascinating figures, almost always eccentric, touched by genius. This is certainly the case with Rui Massena, a well-known figure on the Portuguese cultural. scene who helped transform Guimarães 2012 – European Capital of Culture into a resounding success story. This also happened with the Orquestra Clássica da Madeira, where he was conductor and artistic director for 12 years. Out of Portugal, among many concerts in numerous countries, he was the main guest conductor of the Rome Symphony Orchestra between 2007 and 2009 and the first Portuguese conductor to conduct at the mythical Carnegie Hall in New York. In Portugal, he embarked body and soul on the Expensive Soul Symphonic Experience adventure, a show in which a classical orchestra found space alongside the modern hip hop band Expensive Soul and which resulted in a successful DVD (the best-selling in Portugal in 2012).
After establishing himself for years as a conductor and orchestra director, Massena has been building a solid career as a composer and pianist.
His vast musical experience, which translates into the release of three albums and an EP – Solo (2015), Ensemble (2016), III (2018) and 20 PERCEPTION (2021), the latter two published by Deutsche Grammophone – and concerts in the most prestigious venues inside and outside the country, gives him an enviable and unique baggage, which translates into a fascinating universe of melodies.
His music is now present in some of the most important Modern Classic world playlists and his name is mentioned among the exponents of a genre that is gaining more and more followers all over the world.
In 2021, to mark the World Piano Day, Rui Massena was one of the artists chosen by Deutsche Grammophon to present a special concert as part of a truly stellar selection of the greatest pianists that the present has to offer to history, his name appearing alongside contemporary references of the instrument such as Lang Lang, Maria João Pires or Joep Beving.
On stage, this project presents itself in two formats: Piano Solo and Trio (see tour details).
Two formats on stage, for one same concept: Rui Massena approaches his repertoire in an intimate way, through a personal selection of songs from his three released albums, also opening the door to the presentation of new songs.
A show of great quality with extreme technical care, both in terms of sound, operated by João Paulo Nogueira, and lighting, the responsibility of Tela negra.
Rui Massena Tour – Piano Solo – 1 musician on stage
“I need to go back to listening to my songs on the Piano. It’s been 3 albums and five years since I started this new path. In November 2014 I did my first solo concerts at Casa da Música and CCB, still without a recorded album. I now want to hear how the silence has changed, how the vision of my own music has changed, how my soul has changed. How long each song now has, each gesture, each reaction, each applause. To feel it. To perceive it and let myself go”, Rui Massena
Rui Massena Trio Tour – 3 musicians on stage
