Brushy One String

Brushy, the rural Jamaican bluesman, brings the world together with a one-string guitar.

When film-maker Luciano Blotta walked out of a recording studio in rural Jamaica, far away from tourists and music lovers, he saw something extremely unusual: a man with an instrument. Even more surprising was the fact that the instrument in question – a worn but resonant acoustic guitar – had only one string.
Blotta had just met Brushy One-String (born Andrew Chin), the son of a family of musicians who, despite his difficult life, had a seemingly innate ability to inspire and move even casual listeners – including millions of people who watched and shared his videos on YouTube.
On his first studio album, Destiny, the veteran musician evokes the sweetness of soul singers like Percy Sledge and Louis Armstrong, the grit and wit of Delta bluesmen, all mixed with a Jamaican pulse and ingenuity that shows that the island’s music is much more than reggae. Heartfelt blues combine with dancehall-style vocals on “Grey in my Blue”, while upbeat, catchy ballads like “Life is for Every Man” channel an emotional intensity and deep faith.

“If we can change the words and melodies and bring back love, we can have a balance between God and man,” reflects Brushy. “That’s what we need to unite the world.”.
